Abstract : In this paper I model the effect of institutional design on ethnic identification in a setting in which ethnicity is a strategic choice. I first provide an existence result for pure and mixed strategy equilibria of a general form of the game. I then apply the model to a setting where individuals face a trade-off between ethnic and nationalistic identification. Predictions are made about the types of groups that should be institutionally favored when the institutional goal is to minimize the likelihood of ethnic identification and maximize the likelihood of identification with the state.
